An air cooler (aircooled heat exchanger) is a heat exchanger that uses air to cool hot fluids. The hot fluid in the tube exchanges heat with the air outside the tube through the tube wall and fins. The air used is usually supplied by a ventilator. Air coolers can be used for cooling or condensation, and are widely used in: condensation of steam at the top of oil refining and petrochemical towers; cooling of reflux oil and bottom oil; cooling of various reaction products; cooling of circulating gases and exhaust of power station turbines condensation. A high-quality air cooler is mainly composed of three parts: tube bundle, fan and frame. The tube bundle includes heat transfer tubes, tube boxes, side beams and cross beams, etc. It can be arranged in three basic forms: horizontal, vertical and sloping top (herringbone). Among them, the horizontal layout has a large heat transfer area, even air distribution, and good heat transfer effect; in the sloped roof layout, the ventilator is installed in the herringbone central space, occupying a small area and having a compact structure. In order to offset the influence of the lower heat transfer coefficient on the air side, tubes with fins installed on the outer wall of the plain tube are usually used. Fin tubes serve as heat transfer tubes and can expand the heat transfer area. Ventilators usually use axial flow fans.

The air cooler consists of three basic parts: tube bundle, frame, and fan, as well as auxiliary parts such as heating exhaust pipes, blinds, and ladder platforms. The air cooler uses power to drive the fan impeller to rotate, and the vortex generated continuously sucks in the air. The cold air contacts the heat exchange tube and transfers heat, cooling the medium in the tube to the designed outlet temperature.
